Fruit of the Spirit

The fruit of the spirit are evidence that the Holy Spirit is working in the lives of all biblical Christians.

The 9 fruits are listed in the book of Galatians 5:22-23 as
1. Love
2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Patience
5. Kindness
6. Faithfulness
7. Gentleness
8. Goodness
9. Self Control

Christians who have these fruits are able to be effective witnesses of God`s love and righteousness.

Though there are 9 attributes to the fruit of the spirit, signifying that there is ONE FRUIT, WITH 9 PARTS.

WHO HAS THIS FRUIT?

Accordingly, this fruit is grown by those who have truly repented and truly followers of Jesus.

It is arguable that if one does not bear this fruit, one is not truly a Christian.

THE FLESH LUSTS AGAINST THE SPIRIT

They are in opposition against each other. [Gal. 5:16-17]

But if we follow the lusts of the flesh, we cannot do the will of the spirit [Gal 5:17b]

The fruit of the spirit incorporates the following:

1) LOVE

  • Love does not abandon others during tough times
  • Sticking to those you love
  • Forgiving your enemies/ offenders
  • Love is the self giving love that gives freely without asking anything in return [agape love-John 3:16]


    • 2) JOY

  • It is a spirit –given expression that flourishes best in hard times [1 Thes 1:6]
  • According to Nehemiah, 8:10 “The joy of the Lord is your strength”.



    • 3) PEACE

  • It is real peace when you are no longer under a burden of guilt and shame because God has forgiven all of your sins and because you trusted Christ`s death, burial and resurrection as your only way to ETERNAL LIFE
  • Peace is tranquillity, a state of rest that comes from seeking after God.
  • Jesus is described as the Prince of Peace who brings peace to the hearts of those who desire it.[John 14:27]



    • 4) PATIENCE

  • Which in some translations is LONG SUFFERING OR ENDURANCE?
  • This is the ability to endure persecution and ill treatment
  • It describes a person who has the power to exercise REVENGE but instead exercise RESTRAINT (self control) [Heb. 10:36]



    • 5) KINDNESS

  • It is acting for the good of people regardless of what they do
  • Gentleness in dealing with others.
  • The word describes the ability to act for the welfare of those taxing your patience.
  • Kindness in doing something and not expecting anything in return



    • 6) GOODNESS

  • It is when you stand for the right thing even when others are doing wrong.
  • Having the gift of goodness means God can depend on me to be honest
  • It is our ways towards others through our actions so they can see the fruit in us.



    • 7) FAITHFULNESS

  • Committing oneself to something or someone, e.g. to one’s spouse- no cheating on your spouse
  • [Heb. 12:2] says “Looking unto Jesus, the Author and the Finisher of our faith“.



    • 8) GENTLENESS

  • It is the ability to remain temperate (moderate) in tough situations.
  • The word is best translated “MEEKNESS” not as an indication of “WEAKNESS” but of power and strength under control.
  • The person who possesses this quality pardons injuries, corrects faults and rules his own spirit well. [Gal. 6:1]



    • 9) SELF CONTROL

  • It means having discipline in your life
  • It means to be in control of what we do and say.



    • CONCLUSION

    Just remember that with all these gifts, we need help from God to be able to use the gifts properly.

    If you want the fruit, ask God to live in you and then the more you get to know Him, the more fruit or gifts He will help you have.
